What Is Crypto Clearing? How Collateral and Settlement Work

Coinbase Clearing received CFTC registration on September 28, 2026 for fully collateralized derivatives.

Crypto clearing is the process of establishing what parties owe after a digital-asset trade and managing those obligations through settlement. Settlement is the discharge of the obligations through transfers of cash, assets or the amounts due under a contract. Collateral is an asset provided to secure a financial obligation. These definitions apply the distinction used by the Bank for International Settlements to crypto markets.

For an institution, a trade confirmation is only one part of the transaction. Capital must be available in the right account, accepted as collateral when required, and transferred under enforceable rules. Understanding that sequence helps explain what a new clearing approval changes and which funding constraints remain.

What Does a Crypto Clearinghouse Do?

A central counterparty is an institution that stands between the parties to cleared trades and assumes specified obligations under its rules. CME Group describes its clearinghouse as the buyer to sellers and the seller to buyers. A clearing member is a firm admitted to deal directly with that clearinghouse; other customers may access clearing through a member or broker.

In a simplified transaction between 2 members, central clearing replaces their direct trading exposure to each other with obligations involving the clearinghouse. Counterparty risk is the risk that the party owing performance fails to deliver it. The clearinghouse manages that risk through its collateral arrangements, participation requirements and default procedures, rather than relying only on the original buyer and seller.

The Bank of England describes the same substitution of exposures in its explanation of central counterparties. The relevant question for a crypto desk is therefore which legal entity becomes responsible for performance, and under which rules. A trading venue's brand alone does not answer that question.

How Do Clearing, Settlement and Custody Differ?

Clearing, settlement and custody are 3 distinct functions. The BIS describes clearing as the comparison of trade information or the determination of obligations before settlement. Custody is the safekeeping and administration of assets or the means of controlling them. The international Principles for Financial Market Infrastructures address custody risk separately from settlement finality, reflecting the different responsibilities involved.

Consider a hypothetical purchase of $100,000 of a digital asset. Execution establishes the agreed price and quantity. Clearing establishes the amounts owed and the arrangements for meeting those obligations. Settlement transfers what is due, while custody concerns where the asset is held afterward and who can authorize access to it. A platform may combine these tasks operationally, but the customer still needs to identify each responsibility.

Clearing also differs from liquidation. Liquidation is the closing of a position, potentially because its collateral is insufficient. CME's margin guidance describes that possibility when account funds fall below the minimum required level. A headline about clearing approval therefore does not describe a wave of forced selling.

What Did Coinbase's Clearing Approval Change?

The CFTC's registration record lists Coinbase Clearing as registered on September 28, 2026. Its authorized scope covers fully collateralized futures, options on futures and swaps. These are derivatives, meaning contracts whose value or payments depend on an underlying asset, reference price or other specified outcome. The precise contract terms determine what must be delivered or paid.

Coinbase says the registration adds clearing to its existing brokerage and exchange infrastructure. Those are 3 different regulated functions within the group, carried out by separate named entities. The company describes its new clearinghouse as using USDC collateral and providing 24/7 settlement. Those features are statements from Coinbase; the CFTC's public registration remark specifies the permitted product scope.

Coinbase also says existing partners will continue supporting its margined derivatives business. The approval therefore needs to be read at the product and entity level. It does not establish that every Coinbase derivatives contract now clears through Coinbase Clearing, or that its fully collateralized model extends to all leveraged trading.

What Does Fully Collateralized Mean?

A fully collateralized position has enough funds held to cover each side's maximum contractual loss. The CFTC's clearing rules use the phrase "maximum possible loss" and require the clearing organization to hold the necessary funds at all times. The amount depends on the contract's payoff, rather than a universal percentage applied to every product.

Consider a hypothetical capped contract that pays either $0 or $100 at expiration and is purchased for $40. Ignoring fees, the buyer can lose $40. The seller can lose $60 relative to the $40 sale price if the contract pays $100. Holding those two amounts provides $100 to meet the final payout. This example illustrates a bounded payoff, not the margin requirement of an actual crypto contract.

Notional value is the reference amount used to measure a contract's exposure. It can differ from maximum loss. Before treating a position as fully funded, a desk needs the payoff formula, the permitted price range and the funding obligations of both parties.

How Does Margin Work in Leveraged Clearing?

Initial margin is collateral required to open or support a position. Variation margin is the transfer of amounts reflecting changes in a position's value. CME's educational materials distinguish initial and maintenance requirements, while the Bank of England explains variation margin as covering current exposure. These amounts serve different purposes from prefunding the maximum possible contractual loss.

In a hypothetical linear futures position, $10,000 of account equity supports $100,000 of exposure. A 2% adverse price move produces a $2,000 loss, equal to 20% of the starting equity, before fees and funding charges. The example assumes exposure changes proportionally with price; it is not a published venue margin schedule or a calculated liquidation threshold.

Maintenance margin is the minimum account balance required to keep a position open. Valuation methods and additional collateral calls determine what happens next. CME notes that margin requirements can change as market conditions change. For a desk managing crypto volatility, the practical issue is both the loss on the position and the cash available to meet calls without interrupting other obligations.

How Can Netting Reduce Settlement Funding?

Netting is the offsetting of eligible obligations so that only a resulting balance must be transferred. BIS research describes pre-settlement netting as a way to reduce payment amounts. The arrangement depends on the relevant contracts and legal framework; offsetting two numbers in a spreadsheet does not itself create an enforceable right to pay only the difference.

Suppose a firm owes a counterparty $1 million and is due to receive $800,000 in the same currency on the same settlement date. Under an applicable, enforceable payment-netting agreement, the outgoing balance is $200,000. Without that arrangement, the firm may need to make the $1 million payment before the expected receipt becomes available. The example excludes fees and assumes both obligations qualify for the same netting set.

Payment netting should also be distinguished from reductions in margin. The former changes the payments to be exchanged; the latter depends on a risk model and the positions it recognizes. Balances on unrelated venues cannot simply be combined to produce the same funding benefit.

Does 24/7 Settlement Mean Immediate Cash Access?

A claim of 24/7 settlement describes an operating schedule, but it does not specify every step between a trade and money arriving in a bank account. Coinbase uses that description for its clearinghouse. A desk should separately establish when a deposit is credited, when collateral becomes usable, when a contract settles and when withdrawals can be processed.

USDC is a dollar-referenced stablecoin issued by Circle. Circle's USDC Terms say direct redemption requires an eligible Circle Mint account in good standing. Receiving USDC on a blockchain therefore does not, by itself, establish that the recipient can immediately redeem through the issuer. The receiving institution also needs a supported payout route and the relevant account access.

For treasury planning, measure the complete route. A firm can record 3 separate intervals: transfer submission to credit, credit to usable collateral, and withdrawal request to receipt. These observations reveal the funding schedule that matters to the firm, which a single operating-hours label cannot establish.

Which Risks Remain After Full Collateralization?

Full collateralization addresses the funding of contractual losses. The asset used as collateral, the custodian and the systems moving it still need separate assessment. The international Principles for Financial Market Infrastructures explicitly distinguish credit, liquidity, custody and operational risks. Protecting against one category does not establish that the others are absent.

Stablecoins introduce collateral valuation and redemption questions. Circle's terms provide for redemption of 1 USDC for 1 U.S. dollar, subject to eligibility, applicable terms and fees, while expressly declining to guarantee a $1 price on third-party platforms. A trading desk that needs to sell collateral immediately faces the market price and available depth at that moment. The issuer's redemption commitment and the execution price on an exchange are different mechanisms.

Operational access is another question. A collateral balance may be sufficient to cover a contract while a system incident delays its use or return. The assessment should identify who controls the assets, how transfers are authorized and which recovery procedures apply if normal operations stop.

Why Can Faster Settlement Require More Capital?

Faster settlement shortens the period during which a trade remains unsettled. BIS research also identifies a tradeoff: settling transactions individually can require more funding than arrangements that offset payments. Shorter processing time and lower capital requirements are therefore separate objectives. The benefit depends on how cash, collateral and eligible obligations are organized.

For a hypothetical desk, holding $500,000 at each of 2 venues commits $1 million across the two accounts. If one venue cannot accept a timely transfer from the other, a surplus in the first account does not automatically solve a shortfall in the second. This is an example of fragmented funding, not evidence that any named venue requires those balances.

For market making, the operational implication is to assess accessible capital alongside prices. A quoted spread can look attractive while the hedge requires funds held elsewhere. Moving execution to another venue may change price impact and fees as well as the timing of cash movements. Faster infrastructure helps only when the required assets are actually available.

What to Watch Before Funding a Clearing Account

The next useful checks are measurable. For a service described as 24/7, compare its documented trading, settlement and withdrawal schedules, then record actual processing times during a controlled operational test. Identify the legal entity responsible at each step. Confirm the product's approved scope and the collateral assets, accounts and networks the service accepts.

Settlement finality is the point at which a transfer becomes irrevocable and unconditional under the applicable rules. Principle 8 of the international Principles for Financial Market Infrastructures calls for that point to be clearly defined. A desk should be able to locate the relevant provision, identify when its own obligation is discharged and distinguish that moment from a screen showing a pending credit.

Track 3 outcomes before expanding activity: the time until collateral is usable, the ability to meet an adverse funding scenario, and the time until withdrawn proceeds reach the destination account. If the provider changes its rules or supported products, repeat the affected checks before increasing the amount routed through the service.
